The Institute of Social Movements and Tobacco History (I.K.K.I.K.)
in collaborationwith the School of Classical and Human Studies of
the Democritus University ofThrace and the University of Hamburg
are organizing a scientific conference titled"Tobacco in History:
Economic, social and cultural approaches ".The conference will
take place in Kavala on December 7-9, 2018 and will beattended by
some 35 scientists from Greece and abroad.
The aim of the conference is to bring Kavala and its region as a
national, regionaland international tobacco processing and
marketing center at the center ofscientific interest, and to
expand the field of study and interest by including similarcases
of tobacco smoke.The themes of the conference will relate to a set
of research fields that arehistorically associated with tobacco in
the 19th and 20th centuries: economics,demography, society,
politics, ideologies, childhood, women and men,
industrialtechnology, labor movements, culture, literature,
cinema, advertising, etc.).
It is also expected to highlight the aspects of agricultural
production andcommercial tobacco processing and distribution that
cover the pre-warcommunities of tobacco cities, such as Greek
Orthodox, Muslim, Hebrew,Armenian and Catholic.The conference will
have the opportunity to bring together internationallyrenowned
scientists and young researchers, to exchange views and design
newresearch projects.
Finally, issues of modern exploitation of the historical cultural
heritage of tobacco,the rescue, organization and exploitation of
archives and industrial heritage, aswell as the creation of
innovative museum educational programs will be raised.
